A fisherman by trade, Peter had been captured and
transformed by the Great Shepherd. Is it any wonder that even in Peter's darkest
hour, the welfare og God's sheep was uppermost in his mind?
Ever since the day he stood with Jesus by a fire, the morning air full of the
aroma of roasting fish, Peter had know the way he would die. But Peter would be
faithful. His concern about his death and the way he would die would not
override his concern for the sheep Jesus had commissioned him to feel and
shepherd. And so, sometime around A.D. 63 or 64, Peter writes "to those who have
received a faith of the same kind as ours."
In A.D. 64,
according to the tradition, Peter was crucified upside down for the Lord he once
denied knowing. How Peter had grown in the grace and knowledge of his God!

How to Study 2 Peter
(NASB)
-
Read 2 Peter, marking every reference to
the author in a distinctive color and every reference to the recipients in
another color. Then on the Observations Chart note everything you learn
about each. Observe what the author says about himself. When in his life is
he writing? Who are the recipients< How are they described? Why is he
writing?
-
In a distinctive way, mark in the text
the key words (and their synonyms and pronouns): prophecy (prophet,
prophetic), knowledge (know, knowing, known), remind (reminder), true
(truth), diligent (diligence), false teachers, mockers, destroyed, promise,
day of the Lord. Then list on a piece of paper the truths you learn by
marking these key words. Be thorough because the lists will help you see the
flow of the book.
-
Read through 2 Peter again and look for
specific instructions that Peter gives the readers concerning their behavior
and belief. Record these on the Observations Chart under "Instructions."
Also look for and note any people or groups of people of which Peter warns
them to beware.
-
In this book, Peter states specifically
why he is writing. Look for and underline the verse in which Peter says, "I
am writing to you." Also, underline any other verses that indicate his
purpose in writing. Record his purpose for writing on Structure of 2 Peter.
-
Summarize the message of each paragraph
and record its theme on Structure of 2 Peter. Then determine the chapter
themes and the book theme and record these in the appropriate places on the
chart.
-
Mark every reference to God (and Lord, if
it refers to the Father). Then list what you learn about God from this short
but much-needed epistle.

Application of 2 Peter
-
What would it take to live your life so that
you may be found spotless and blameless at His coming?
-
Is there a danger today that false teachers
will arise among the brethren as in Peter’s day? What do you need to know to
be able to detect them?
-
How can you keep from falling from your own
steadfastness? Practically, what do you need to do in order to grow in the
grace and knowledge of Jesus Christ?
